Luke and Miracle Max

Imagine being told your baby has only a 50 per cent chance of survival.

This was a reality for parents Kate and Paul Bennett when baby Luke was born three months early, weighing just 1034 grams.

After a traumatic birth, Luke was whisked away to Mater’s Neonatal Critical Unit (NCCU) and Kate and Paul were told that their baby may not survive.

Attached to machines, Luke battled on in the NCCU.

Kate waited seven long days to hold Luke while the machines kept him alive.

Over the next three gruelling months Kate and Paul visited their child every day, hoping that he would stay strong and beat the odds. And Luke did just that.

After meeting more challenges than most of us will in our lifetime, and despite doctors only giving him a 50 per cent chance of survival, the Bennett family were able to take their little miracle home.

“I would encourage everyone to support the Mater Little Miracles Appeal and help Mater to continue to save the lives of our little miracles,” Kate said.

Thanks to the expertise of the Mater medical team, Luke is free of all the health issues that are most common in premature babies.

Each year 2000 babies receive specialist, life-saving care at Mater's NCCU.

Your support will help fund research that will mean more Mater Little Miracles like Luke get home safely.
