Welcome to the September edition of the online Mater Nursing and Midwifery Alumni newsletter.

Our new regular newsletter will provide you with information on Alumni functions and other events, as well as stories that reflect our motto of honouring yesterday, celebrating today and investing in tomorrow.


A message from our chairperson, Cheryl Clayton

In 1906, the Sisters of Mercy opened a 20-bed private hospital in a former residential home in Brisbane’s North Quay. Some four years later in 1910, the opening of Mater Private Hospital on Mater Hill was celebrated with much fanfare. Read more.


Graduate nurse represents alumni

Twenty-six year old Alice Atyeo was announced Mater’s 2009 Graduate Nurse of the Year at the Mater Clinical Teaching and Learning Awards held in October last year, she is also the graduate representative on the Nursing and Midwifery Alumni Council.

Remembering Sister Eileen Pollard

Sister Eileen Pollard spent more than 60 years living and working within the Mater community, starting her nursing training at Mater at age 15 and later taking her vows as a Sister of Mercy. In this edition of Alumni News, we remember Sister Eileen's devotion to nursing. Read more.


Alumni Ball celebrates 100 years on Mater Hill

On Saturday 14 August 1910, a crowd of 8000 people congregated on the space we now know as the Aubigny forecourt, to celebrate the official opening of Mater Private Hospital South Brisbane. Read more.


Mercy Week

On 24 September 1827, Catherine McAuley opened a House of Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin where she and other lay women sheltered the homeless, reached out to the sick and dying and educated poor girls. Read more.

A. $50 annual subscription + $15 joining fee
B. For those in receipt of benefits (pensions, etc) $20 annual subscription + $10 joining fee

Associate membership
Open to current nursing/midwifery students $10 annual subscription (no joining fee)
