In 1906, the Sisters of Mercy
opened a 20-bed private hospital
in a former residential home in
Brisbane’s North Quay. Some four
years later in 1910, the opening
of Mater Private Hospital on Mater
Hill was celebrated with much
fanfare. The Sisters tradition of
care and compassion for the sick
and the needy has since led to the
establishment of seven hospitals
under their guidance, including
Mater Private Hospital Redland
which opened in 2000.
Throughout the years the Sisters’
compassion and commitment to
care has remained steadfast. As
we celebrate Mercy Week and
‘100 years on Mater Hill’, we are
provided with an opportunity
to reflect on the wonderful
contribution the Sisters of Mercy
have made and continue to make
in our community and indeed
throughout the world.
During this time we also
remember Sister Eileen Pollard who
passed away in June. Sister Eileen
lived, worked and prayed within
the Mater community for over 60
years and was always there to listen
and to give good, sound advice.
We miss her dearly and her gentle
presence and kindness will be
remembered always.
