Mrs Dorothy Stringer OAM is the founder of BICARE Inc (Brain Injured Children’s Aftercare Recovery Endeavours Inc). She has been fundraising for sick children in need at the Mater for nearly 30 years.
During this time, Mrs Stringer and her group of dedicated volunteers have fundraised for the Mater Children’s respiratory laboratory, the ROBIN Unit (Rehabilitation Of children with acquired Brain Injuries and Neuromuscular disorders), Paediatric Intensive Care and the Complex Care unit, which supports families caring for children with multiple medical conditions.
BICARE recently raised $34,000 to purchase a 24-hour continuous video monitoring machine. It helps prevent neurological damage in children and provides faster and more accurate diagnosis.
“BICARE is proud to assist the Mater in purchasing vital equipment so children with special needs can receive first-class care,” said Mrs Stringer.
“Brain injury can often be a life-long heartache for families, so we are committed to not only supporting those affected by brain injuries, but helping prevent these complications.”
BICARE funds are raised through the operation of a busy thrift shop voluntarily managed by Mrs Debbie Woodside and her team of volunteers.
They are supported and encouraged by many friends and community service organisations who make generous donations of good-quality second-hand clothing, books, jewellery and bric-a-brac.
