Bush turns orange to support Mater

The town of Bowenville, located near Dalby, turned a bright shade of orange during September for the annual Orange Tie Bush Ball.

Organised by the Bowenville Ladies Auxiliary, the ball is held in memory of Bowenville resident Julie Mead, who sadly passed away in a fatal car crash in 2008.

Julie was travelling with her son, Cameron, at the time of the accident. Fortunately, Cameron survived, but spent considerable time at Mater Children’s Hospital in intensive care.

In 2009, the residents of Bowenville held the inaugural Orange Tie Bush Ball—aptly named after Julie’s love of the colour orange. This year’s ball was held on 18 September, raising over $30 000 for Mater Children’s Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

“We all wanted to do something for the people that helped Cameron recover, while honouring the memory of Julie”,said Orange Tie Ball committee member Amanda Morgan.

“Organising a ball—themed around Julie’s favourite colour— to raise funds for charity seemed like the best idea.

“We were very honoured to support Mater Children’s Hospital PICU this year. The staff there looked after Cameron so well during his recovery. They really treated him like part of their family, some of them still keep in touch with the Mead family now that Cameron is back home.”
