Gavin and Elizabeth Turnbull look back on their late son’s life and recall a gentle, sensitive character with a passion for art, who left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Gavin and Elizabeth remember how Iain showed a creative flair from the age of eight, designing artworks in various styles including wood, paper, paint, pencil and screen printing.

In 2006 Iain was diagnosed with advanced colo-rectal cancer. He was an outpatient at Mater for almost three years before he passed away as an inpatient in September last year, aged just 49.

It was Iain’s dying wish that his parents exhibit his works and donate the proceeds from the sale of his artwork to Mater Foundation and the Queensland College of Arts (QCA)

In honour of Iain’s wish, Gavin and Elizabeth displayed a number of Iain’s works at two concurrent Iain Turnbull Memorial Retrospective Exhibitions at the QCA Student Project Gallery, Southbank and Grahame Galleries + Editions, Milton in August and September.

Proceeds were donated equally to Mater Foundation, to purchase equipment for oncology services, and to QCA.
