Mary Lakey’s diagnosis with ovarian cancer, more than three years ago, has motivated her to become involved in raising funds for ovarian cancer research at Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI).
“Ovarian cancer is called the silent killer with good reason,” Mary said.
“It really is an insidious disease. My symptoms could have related to almost anything.”
Though still battling the disease, Mary held Fabulous February—a month of daily fundraising events held throughout Brisbane during ovarian cancer awareness month.
With events ranging from high teas and garden parties to shopping tours, Mary and her band of dedicated supporters raised more than $27 000 for MMRI.
Each year in Australia 850 women die of the disease. Sadly, there are no screening tests that detect it in its early stages, and by the time it is diagnosed the cancer is usually advanced and survival rates are low.
MMRI is researching the development of a simple blood test to screen for ovarian cancer and identify women who need further testing.
“I have five children, including two daughters, two daughter-in-laws and five grandchildren. They are the reason I am involved in raising funds for research,” Mary said.
