House for Life brings help to sick babies and children
There were smiles all round on Saturday 26 November, when local couple Robert and Sandra Cross purchased their four-bedroom, double storey dream home at North Lakes just 30 minutes north of Brisbane’s CBD.
The Plantation Homes built home is the first of its kind in Queensland and was truly a labour of love with proceeds from the sale being donated to Mater Mothers’ Hospitals (MMH) for the care of sick babies and children.
Plantation Homes, through their network of suppliers and subcontractors, have already built and auctioned three luxury homes with all proceeds donated to the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) at MMH.
“In 2007, we launched the House for Life project—committing to the building and auctioning of high-quality homes with the aim of raising $1.5 million for Mater's NCCU.” said Paul Roots, General Manager of Plantation Homes Queensland.
The NCCU provides 24 hour specialised medical and nursing care to approximately 2000 seriously ill and premature babies each year, some of whom are born as early as 24 weeks and weigh as little as 400 grams.
There was plenty of community support for Mater’s NCCU on the day.
Helium balloons adorned the site, the local Bunnings store donated $400 in gift vouchers and the crowd of bidders, spectators and contributors sipped on complimentary coffees provided by Coast Coffee whilst they waited for the auction to begin.
“There was a real excitement in the air, everyone wanted the auction to go well and each new bid was greeted with a round of applause.” said Mater Foundation’s Executive Director, Nigel Harris.
“It was obvious that there was a lot of warmth from the North Lakes community for the house that was truly built with love.”
There was a huge cheer as the auction came to an intense close just before 11 am as the hammer dropped at the final price of $523 000.
Our sincere thanks goes to Plantation Homes, Stockland, all of our partners the tradesman, designers and decorators as well as the local community for their tremendous contribution towards the project.
