2012 Grant Round 1 is now open!
For more information on the type and amount of grants that will be awarded please click here.
During this grant round, Mater Foundation will only accept Expressions of Interests (EOI) via an online Mater Intranet Form which will be launched on Monday 6 February 2012. In the meantime, grant applicants are advised to prepare submissions in the following manner:
Once the online form is launched, simply copy and paste the answer from your completed EOI into the online form, attach your authorisation form and budget, and hit the submit button.
- An Authorisation Form and program budget must be submitted or your application will be deemed incomplete and will not be assessed.
- The grant round will close Monday 19 March 2012, 5 pm. No EOI will be accepted after this time. Due to the large number of EOIs that are received, applicants are encouraged to submit their EOI as early in the grant round as possible.
- All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their EOI no later than Friday 13 April 2012.
- Mater Foundation may fund one or several Expressions of Interest in each category, depending on the applications received.
- Please note that research projects are excluded. If you have a research project that needs funding, please contact the Mater Medical Research Institute Research Development Officer on 07 3163 2385.
- Scroll down this page for more information about Mater Foundation applications and reporting requirements. If you have any additional questions, please contact the Mater Foundation Grant Administration Manager on 07 3163 8291.

How do I apply for a grant from Mater Foundation?
If your grant request is for medical research, please first gain approval from your Theme Leader at Mater Medical Research Institute (MMRI) prior to approaching Mater Foundation. The Foundation pledges a specific level of support to MMRI every calendar year for MMRI priority projects.
For all other applications, Mater Foundation accepts Expressions of Interest (EOI) for funding twice yearly, during its grant rounds.
What do I need to do if I receive a grant from Mater Foundation?
Recipients of a grant from Mater Foundation will receive a copy of an Acceptance Addendum which you will need to sign and return to the Foundation, indicating your acceptance of the terms of the grant.
Your Management Accountant will also receive a copy of the Acceptance Addendum for their reference. Please speak to your Management Accountant about sending an invoice to Mater Foundation to request a release of your approved funds.
Part of your responsibility in accepting a grant from Mater Foundation includes a twice yearly report on your progress and use of the grant monies. Grants of $5,000 or more are required to prepare and submit a funding report in June and December until the grant is complete.
After your grant is complete the Foundation may still ask for a short progress update from time to time, for donors who are interested in learning about the long-term impact of their gifts. These long-term updates are not time–consuming and usually consist of a few paragraphs that you can easily pull from existing documentation.
Who decides what projects receive a grant?
Mater Foundation is committed to following the wishes of our donors and supporters. Often our donors request their support funds a specific piece of equipment, program or hospital. More than 80% of funds the Foundation receives are tied to a specific project by the request of donors.
The Mater Foundation Allocations Committee approves applications after the close of each grant round. Occasionally, applicants may be contacted to provide additional information to the Committee or to speak directly to the potential donor of a specific fund. Such a fact-finding request should not be considered an implicit agreement of funding. Please expect written notification of the outcome of your EOI within four weeks of the close of the grant round.
What can I do if my Expression of Interest is not successful?
All decisions of the Allocations Committee are considered final.
The Foundation receives many more requests than it is able to fund at any given time, and the Allocations Committee will indicate if it would be willing to re–review your EOI during the next grant round.
How does Mater Foundation fund its grants?
Mater Foundation is dependent on the extreme generosity of our community – individuals, businesses and events – to add value to the important, life-saving work done at the Mater every day. The Mater Foundation funds requests through a combination of four types of funding streams:
- Specific
- General
- Endowment
- Discretionary
Specific funds are monies allocated by a donor or obtained through fundraising events which are allocated toward a specific purpose – this is the most common type of funding at this time.
Endowment funds are monies held in trust toward the future growth of the hospital and are also most often allocated toward a specific purpose.
General and discretionary funds are not restricted to any specific purpose, but are by far the rarest type of funding available. These funds are most often allocated to areas of greatest need within the Mater.
Does Mater Foundation fund costs for professional education or to attend a seminar or conference?
Mater Foundation and the Mater Education Centre fund these requests through a joint initiative. Information about how to apply is on the Mater intranet, or please contact the Mater Education Centre directly on 3163 8544.
Who can I contact for more information?
Please contact the Grant Administration Manager on 3163 8291.
