Newborns receive helping hand
Newborn babies at Mater Mothers’ Hospital will receive a very warm helping hand thanks to the generosity of Cromwell Group staff.
The Cromwell Group is one of Queensland’s largest property development, project management and corporate investment companies in Queensland.
With several staff members welcoming new babies to their families in the past 12 months, it was no surprise when it came to making a charitable gift that they decided to fund the purchase of two mobile overhead baby warmers for the Mater Mothers’ Hospital.
Babies are not as adaptable as adults to temperature change. When babies are cold-stressed, they use energy and oxygen to generate warmth. If skin temperature drops just one degree from the ideal 36.5 degrees, a baby’s oxygen use can increase by ten percent.
By keeping babies at optimal temperatures with the aid of a baby warmer, they can conserve energy and build up reserves. This is especially important when babies are sick or premature.
More than 9500 babies are born at Mater Mothers’ Hospital every year. The two mobile baby warmers donated by Cromwell will double the existing number of mobile warmers in the birthing suites—making it easier for staff to keep more babies warm during the highly sensitive first eight weeks of life.
