Help babies at Mater breathe easier this Easter

Help babies at Mater breathe easier this Easter

IGA store and Bendigo Bank branch staff are hopping into the Easter spirit in support of this year’s Mater Little Miracles Easter Appeal

This Easter, just by visiting your local IGA store or Bendigo Bank branch and purchasing a $2 token, you will be helping more than 1500 babies who need to be resuscitated at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals each year.

Some of these tiny, fragile babies can be resuscitated up to six times a day—funds raised from the appeal will support training for nurses to help more babies breathe easier.

Mater Foundation Chief Executive Officer Nigel Harris is appealing to the community to support this year’s Mater Little Miracles Easter Appeal and help Mater’s doctors and nurses improve resuscitation outcomes for babies.

“Mater's specialist doctors, nurses and researchers have developed special resuscitation techniques and training programs that are not only being used across Australia, but around the world.

“There are always improvements that can be made to help more babies breathe easier when they’re still in hospital, which is why we need your support to continue this life-saving research.”

More than 2000 seriously ill and premature babies are treated at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals’ Neonatal Critical Care Unit each year and many of these families come from regional Queensland.

“These mothers and their babies from regional areas make the long journey to Brisbane to ensure they receive the very best care.  It’s only with community support that Mater’s clinicians can continue to make important advancements that greatly benefit these families,” Mr Harris said.

IGA has been a long-term supporter of the Easter appeal, helping to raise $2.6 million since the partnership with Mater began 12 years ago.  Bendigo Bank has backed the campaign for 11 years and this year, has kick-started the appeal with a $32 000 donation.

The Nine Network continues to support the appeal and has done so since 2005.

“We wish to thank our partners for their ongoing support and passion for ensuring that every baby born into this world has the best possible start to life,” Mr Harris said.

The $2 tokens are available for purchase up until Friday 21 April.  For more information or to make a donation to the Mater Little Miracles Easter Appeal visit
