Alumni scholarships announced

The Mater Nursing and Midwifery Alumni had the pleasure of naming Mater nurses Claire Kelly and Renee Muirhead as this year’s scholarship recipients.

Claire Kelly, the Cancer Care Coordinator for private patients at Mater, was awarded the Sister Eileen Pollard Oncology Nursing Scholarship.

Clinical Nurse Consultant at Mater Mothers’ Hospitals, Renee Muirhead, received the Betty Kennedy International Nursing and Midwifery Scholarship.

The Scholarships, funded through the generous contributions from Mater supporters, enable Mater clinicians to be at the cutting edge of new research and discoveries by taking part in a professional development opportunity, with key learnings being shared with their colleagues.

Claire travelled recently to Dallas, Texas in the United States of America to attend the 9th annual Oncology Nurse Navigation and Survivorship Course where she was one of three international attendees amongst 1200 delegates.

“The conference and networking opportunities were outstanding and the learning experience was one of the best of my career,” she said.

“I have learnt new strategies and systems to enhance the contribution of nurse navigation activities at Mater and specifically how we can demonstrate the impact and value of cancer care coordinators for both the patient and the organisation.”

Renee, who has worked at Mater for 18 years, is a Clinical Nurse Consultant at Mater Mothers' Hospitals' Neonatal Critical Care Unit.

The scholarship allowed Renee to attend the 7th Congress of European Academy of Paediatric Societies held in Paris where the latest research and clinical care practices were showcased.

The scholarships are in honour of Betty Kennedy and the late Sr Eileen Pollard who both embodied the true spirit of the Sisters of Mercy and the Mater Values of Mercy, Dignity, Quality, Commitment and Care throughout their successful nursing careers.
