Book honours Mater Children's Hospital

A new book about the rich, 83-year history of Mater Children’s Hospital is now available from Mater Foundation.

Caring and Compassionate, the Mater Children’s Hospital 1931 – 2014 by Helen Gregory is a tribute to all Mater people including doctors, nurses, therapists and other staff who cared for tens of thousands of ‘Mater Children’ during this time.

Launched by former CEO Dr John O’Donnell, the book tells the Mater Children’s Hospital story, from its opening by the Sisters of Mercy during the Great Depression to its closure on 29 November 2014—and all against the background of rapidly growing and diverse South East Queensland populations, developments in paediatrics and changes in Governmental health policies.

In its 83-year history, the hospital etched a warm place in the hearts of many thousands of Queenslanders. This book honours the memories and stories of the caring culture, character, warm ‘personality’ and achievements that remain.

A companion to Helen Gregory’s centenary history of Brisbane’s Mater Hospitals, Expressions of Mercy, this new book is a wonderful addition to the library of local history buffs, former patients, families and staff, and Mater people in general.

Caring and Compassionate is available for just $35 and can be purchased from Foundation on 3 or by visiting our online shop.
