Brad Jones Racing V8 supercar drivers Tim Blanchard, Tim Slade and Nick Percat took time out from the track to compete in the Summit V8 Mater Food Challenge with Mater’s young patients yesterday (26 July).
They put their culinary skills to the test at Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane before competing in the Coates Hire SuperSprint at Ipswich on Friday 28 July.
Sponsored by Summit Fleet Leasing and Management, the race car drivers cooked against each other with a young patient to create a gourmet ‘V8’ dish, guided by Mater’s Executive Chef and a dietitian.
The meals were later judged by Summit Fleet representatives who awarded the coveted trophy to Tim Slade and his cooking partner Kaitlyn Brown for their delicious 'Aussie' burger.
Summit Fleet Leasing and Management have supported Mater over a number of years, providing vehicles for volunteer services and other financial support valued at $80 000 annually.
Mater Foundation Brisbane's Chief Executive Officer Nigel Harris said Summit Fleet Leasing and Management had been a supporter of Mater and each year kindly arranged V8 drivers to visit Mater patients.
"Young patients at the centre are often dealing with chronic conditions and have to spend weeks, and sometimes months in hospital, and there are many who come for ongoing outpatient appointments.
“These patients look forward to the annual visit and a cook-off is a fun way they can engage with these professional race car drivers when they would normally watch them on television.”
It was also a fun and rewarding experience for driver Tim Slade who took part in the cooking challenge.
“Last year was my first time visiting Mater Young Adult Health Centre Brisbane and it was a really enjoyable experience and this visit was no different,” Tim said.
“I like to cook a bit at home, but I’m no expert, so the cooking challenge provides a few good laughs.
“We brought along new team mate Nick Percat with us this year, so it was good for him to meet the patients and see the great work that everyone does at this centre.”
