Amy's Story

Mater Nurse, Amy was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. She opted for a double mastectomy.

My name is Amy, and I’m a nurse at the Mater Hospital. At the age of 27, I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Triple Negative is one of the toughest breast cancers to treat, and right now, has no targeted therapy. During chemotherapy I found out that I have the BRCA (Breast Cancer gene) mutation so I did one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I opted for a double mastectomy. Because of the generosity of people that give to Mater Chicks in Pink they were able to finically support the genetic testing I needed to have done.

But no matter how hard things became, I had the support of my breast care nurse, Ash.

Because of her unique knowledge and support, Ash knew how to guide me through my darkest days. She knew just what to say and what to do, and without her, my cancer journey would have been so much harder.

The physical, emotional, and financial burden of a cancer diagnosis is incredibly exhausting. But thanks to the generous fundraising of the International Women’s Day Fun Run participants, I was able to access invaluable assistance when I needed it most.

With your help, we can provide women like myself with practical, personalised services and invest in breast cancer research.
