When Gladstone couple Natalie and Zac planned the birth of their second child at Mater Private Hospital Rockhampton, they never imagined they wouldn’t make it there in time.

In November 2024, their son Jude made a surprise early entrance into the world—born healthy and safe on the side of the road, somewhere between Gladstone and Rockhampton.

“More than 100 kilometres from their midwife, Natalie and Zac found themselves in an unexpected situation. But thanks to Di-Marie, Midwifery Unit Manager at Mater Rockhampton, they weren’t alone.

“I got the call that they were on their way,” Di-Marie says. “Zac wasn’t sure whether to turn back or keep going. But once Natalie’s waters broke, I told them to pull over immediately.”

Di-Marie coached them through a whole delivery.

Together, Natalie and Zac delivered baby Jude safely—an incredible moment that speaks to the dedication and reach of Mater’s regional care team.

Remarkably, Di-Marie was also present for the birth of their first child, a continuity of care that builds trust within regional communities.

This Mater Giving Day, Natalie and Zac are deeply thankful for the expert support of Mater Mothers’ Rockhampton midwives—whose care helped bring Jude safely into the world, despite the distance.
