It is with great pleasure we celebrate Ormiston College who have been named a Mater Foundation Community Hero.
Since 2015, Ormiston College have been supporting Mater Foundation through their fundraising initiative The Chop. The Chop was launched by Social Justice Leadership Prefects, India Hedger and Michaela Mulder. The concept came about following Michaela’s mother’s battle with cancer, which she won, and the difficulty she had getting treatment in the Redlands area. That year sixteen young women participated in the event and $7,000 was raised.
Now in its eighth year of The Chop, a record-breaking amount of over $40,000 was raised for Mater Chicks in Pink with 42 Year 12 students participating. A truly amazing effort! Ormiston College The Chop has now raised over $140,000 for Mater Chicks in Pink and students across the College look forward to being part of The Chop and making a difference to the lives of women with cancer. The students start growing their hair at the beginning of the year, with The Chop being held in October during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The student’s hair is donated to Sustainable Salons and the valuable locks go to charitable organisations and wigmakers to change the lives of those suffering from medically-induced hair loss. Over the years, hair from over 150 students has been made into charitable wigs for both children and adults
Thank you goes to the Social Justice Leadership Committee and to everyone who contributed and donated to this worthy initiative. Well done to the Year 12 students and Ormiston College!
