In October, we acknowledge the contribution of Chris Grieves who has been named a Mater Foundation Community Hero.

Last year, Chris was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer which only impacts 1.3 people in 100,000 in Australia.

Despite still undergoing treatment at Mater in Rockhampton, Chris committed to supporting cancer research by participating in Cycle for Cancer.

Chris rode 100 kms in 7 days with the support of his niece, Emma who unselfishly joined him, forming their team ‘Thighs of Fire’.

Chris is passionate about improving treatment and outcomes for others who are impacted by cancer, now and in the future. His journey has shown him just how many people and families are impacted by cancer and how non-discriminatory the disease can be.

His plight to give back to the Mater Foundation to continue research and treatment options in support of others, is why Chris is a Mater Foundation Community Hero.
