We are thrilled to recognise Maria as a Mater Foundation Community Hero!
Over the past year, Maria has raised over $4,000 and used her personal journey to inspire her community to take part in the International Women’s Day Fun Run (IWDFR) and Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM). Through her story of strength and resilience, she continues to motivate others to join the cause and make a difference.
Maria, a mother of two and proud grandmother, has faced her own challenging journey with breast cancer. Diagnosed in December 2022 at the age of 61, she discovered two different types of breast cancer — Stage 2 in her left breast and Stage 3 in her right. Thanks to a swift diagnosis through her regular breast screening and subsequent biopsy, Maria underwent a double mastectomy at Mater Private Hospital Townsville. Her treatment journey included five months of chemotherapy and three weeks of radiation, showcasing her determination and courage.
Maria’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of regular screenings for early detection. She credits early intervention with identifying the more serious diagnosis in her right breast before symptoms appeared. Her advice to others is clear: “If you have a screen coming up, do not miss it — make sure you go. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking, ‘I had nothing for so long, they’ll just find nothing again’.”
Maria has channelled her experience into advocacy, bravely sharing her story to inspire others. Through events like the IWDFR and BCAM, Maria has become a true champion for the cause. Known for her generosity, she’s brought joy to Mater Townsville staff with her signature chocolate brownies during her treatments. In 2024, Maria even shared her beloved brownie recipe for our Breasties Brunch promotional tea towels.
Mater Foundation Community Hero recognises and celebrates the inspiring contributions of our volunteers, fundraisers and advocates.
Thank you, Maria, we value your outstanding contribution!
