We are pleased to recognise Mater Mothers’ Hospital Auxiliary as a Mater Foundation Community Hero!
For more than 40 years, the Mater Mothers’ Hospital Auxiliary has been a cornerstone of community support for Mater Foundation. This dedicated group of volunteers has tirelessly raised funds to provide life-saving equipment and advanced medical care for mothers and babies.
Operating from their stall at Mater Mothers’ Hospital in South Brisbane, the Mater Mothers’ Auxiliary main goal is raising money for Neonatal Critical Care Unit by selling baby clothes and jams, pickles, cakes, crafts, and organising raffles throughout the year. Their efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars, making a profound impact on neonatal care.
One of their most remarkable contributions came in 2016, when they donated $52,500 to bring a team of medical specialists from Vanderbilt Hospital in the USA to assist with Australia’s first in-utero spina bifida surgery, a groundbreaking procedure that changed lives.
From humble beginnings, when a group of women started raising funds to buy textbooks for their daughters studying nursing at Mater, to today. The Auxiliary’s commitment and passion have earned them recognition such as the prestigious Betty McGrath Award. They continue their vital fundraising efforts including supporting the Nine Telethon for Mater Little Miracles. Their dedication shines through in their inspiring message: “We are proud to be part of a team who dedicate their time to contribute to the fundraising of needed equipment.”
The Mater Mothers’ Hospital Auxiliary exemplifies what it means to be a true Community Hero, turning compassion into action and making a lasting difference for families across Queensland.
