In January we acknowledge Elizabeth Johnson, who has been named as a Mater Foundation Community Hero.
Elizabeth has been a passionate Mater Foundation supporter since 2016, climbing her way up thousands of stairs each year in events such as Climb For Cancer, Sky Point Sea to Sky Q1 Stair Challenge and Stadium Stomp.
Elizabeth’s father passed away in 2003, at the young age of 48, after a long battle with bowel cancer. She has also watched her best friend go through treatment for breast cancer. Seeing her loved ones go through cancer treatment has driven Elizabeth to raise funds to help Mater researchers improve the way we diagnose, treat and, ultimately, prevent cancer.
“I am passionate about raising money each year for cancer research in honour of my late father, and my friends who have travelled the challenging journey of cancer recovery,” said Elizabeth.
“I often don’t feel like exercising, but then I think, ‘Dad didn’t like chemo either, but he had to do it’.”
In 2024 Elizabeth hopes to raise over $10,000 to support valuable cancer research at Mater.
